چکیده

Meconium from babies with cystic fibrosis (CF) has been shown by Green and Shwachman (1968) to contain readily detectable amounts of albumin. Screening for the disease is therefore possible by testing meconium specimens for the presence of albumin with albustix or Boehringer test tape. Any screening procedure, however, requires the availability of reliable methods for checking positive and doubtful results; for this reason, we have investigated the plasma proteins in meconium specimens from a series of normal babies and from

The meconium plug syndrom is a benign form of colon obstruction in the neonate caused by a firm white plug of mucus. These babies usually present with abdominal distention. Abdominal X ray film reveals distended loops of bowels. Barium enema shows a long radiolucency within the desending colon. The plug is passed after the barium enema or a saline rectal irrigation. Although meconium plug syndr...

Study of the oligosaccharide units from mucus glycoproteins of meconium from normal infants and from cases of cystic fibrosis with meconium ileus.

1. The mucus glycoproteins in meconium from normal infants and from infants having cystic fibrosis with meconium ileus have been studied. 2. Whereas normal meconium contained about 50% protein-bound carbohydrate, the meconium from cystic fibrosis contained only about 10%. 3. Glycopolypeptides were prepared from the mucus of glycoproteins. The oligosaccharide units from this material were releas...

Diagnostic delay in cystic fibrosis: lessons from newborn screening.

Newborn screening for cystic fibrosis (CF) by dried blood spot immunoreactive trypsin (IRT) assay is now feasible, but the benefits are disputed. We have studied the symptoms and signs at diagnosis in 48 babies detected during a newborn screening programme, and also the delay between presentation with symptoms and diagnosis in all 33 babies diagnosed at our CF clinic in the two years before scr...

Distribution of non-plasma protein components in meconium from healthy and cystic fibrosis neonates.

The distribution of four antigens of alimentary tract origin was studied in meconium collected from healthy and cystic fibrosis (CF) neonates. Two antigens, carcinoembryonic antigen and a beta glycoprotein designated Mec 6, had significantly lower concentrations in the meconium from CF neonates compared with that from healthy full-term infants. As their concentrations were unrelated to whether ...

Screening for cystic fibrosis in the newborn by meconium analysis.

During a 4-year routine screening programme for cystic fibrosis (CF) 15 464 specimens were examined for raised meconium albumin levels by a test strip method and by electroimmunoassay. The incidence of false-positive results was about 5 per 1000 specimens in either test. This could be reduced by 90% by determining the ratio of albumin : alpha-1-trypsin inhibitor (a ratio below 2.0 being conside...
